Laurier Fagnan
Passionné de la voix humaine, Laurier Fagnan détient une maîtrise en pédagogie du chant de l’Université Laval et un doctorat en direction chorale (University of Alberta/IRCAM, Paris). Il détient également un certificat en vocologie de la National Center for Voice and Speech aux États-Unis. Responsable du programme de musique au Campus Saint-Jean à Edmonton, il est depuis 1995 chef de la dynamique Chorale Saint-Jean, le plus grand chœur francophone de l’Ouest canadien. En 2008 il a eu l’honneur de diriger un chœur de 1,400 voix lors du concert gala du 400e anniversaire de la Ville de Québec. Son domaine innovateur de recherche, l’acoustique des chœurs, l’a amené à donner des conférences lors de colloques internationaux et à offrir des ateliers en technique vocale pour des centaines de chorales au Canada, aux États-Unis et en France. Il a récemment lancé un DVD sur la technique vocale pour chœurs incorporant les principes vocaux du bel canto appliqués au chant choral et écrit présentement un livre préconisant ces mêmes principes. Il a été conférencier invité pour la Fédération des chorales de l’Europe en Bulgarie et pour l’Acoustical Society of America. En 2012 il était directeur artistique des Choralies internationales Edmonton qui ont rassemblé des choristes de toute la francophonie et a agi en tant que président de Podium 2016, congrès et festival national de Canada Choral. M. Fagnan est régulièrement formateur pour l’Alliance chorale du Québec et chef invité aux Choralies de Vaison-la-Romaine en France ainsi qu’à l’Académie internationale du Domaine Forget au Québec. À la demande de Cypress Music à Vancouver, il a créé en 2016 La série enchantée, collection de nouvelles compositions et arrangements pour chœur en français par des compositeurs canadiens. Il est récipiendaire du Richard S. Eaton Award et de la Médaille du jubilé de diamant de la reine Elizabeth II en reconnaissance de sa contribution au chant choral canadien. En mai 2018, il fait sa première comme chef à Carnegie Hall à New York dirigeant la New England Symphony et quatre chœurs canadiens. Il y retournera en juin 2025 pour diriger le Requiem de Mozart. Il a déjà servi comme président de Choir Alberta et en automne 2020 est nommé président de Canada Choral, l’association nationale des chorales et chefs de chœur canadiens, et en 2022 est nommé Rédacteur en chef de la revue nationale Anacrusis.
With a doctorate in choral conducting (U of A / IRCAM, Paris) and a master’s degree in vocal pedagogy (U. Laval), there is nothing Laurier Fagnan enjoys more than inspiring singers to make the most beautiful sound possible. He has served as guest conductor and vocal coach for many choral festivals and has offered hundreds of workshops in vocal technique to choirs from Whitehorse to Seattle to Paris. He was awarded a generous grant from the Canada Foundation for Innovation to establish Canada’s first Vocal Acoustics Laboratory at Campus Saint-Jean of the University of Alberta, where he has conducted the very dynamic Chorale Saint-Jean since 1995. Dr. Fagnan was keynote speaker at the general assembly of the European Choral Federation in Bulgaria and has presented his research on choral acoustics and bel canto vocal principles at several international conferences. His DVD on vocal technique for choirs incorporates bel canto vocal principles applied to choral singing. Recent highlights include conducting at international festivals in Vaison-la-Romaine, France and Domaine Forget, Québec as well as presenting at the National Conference of the American Choral Directors’ Association and the Acoustical Society of America in Salt Lake City. Dr. Fagnan recently completed a post-graduate certificate in Vocology in the US and served as co-Chair of Podium 2016, Canada’s national conference and festival of choral singing. He was guest conductor at the 40th anniversary of the Académie internationale du Domaine Forget (Québec) and made his conducting debut at Carnegie Hall in New York in May of 2018. At the request of Cypress Music in Vancouver, he established in 2016 La série enchantée, a collection of new choral pieces in French written by Canadian composers. He is a recipient of the Richard S. Eaton Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his contribution to Canadian choral music. Dr. Fagnan has previously served as president of Choir Alberta and in 2020 was elected President of Choral Canada, Canada’s national association of choirs and choral conductors. In 2022 he assumed the role of Editor-in-Chief of its national journal, Anacrusis.
