Laura Hawley is a Canadian musician known for her compelling approach to musical leadership and artistic programming, collaborative versatility, and distinctive compositional style. She is artistic director of Da Camera Singers (Edmonton), conductor of ChandraTala Women’s Choir (Edmonton), founding artistic director of Hypatia’s Voice Women’s Choir (Ottawa), and is an active clinician with ensembles throughout Canada including CAMMAC, Music & Beyond (Ottawa), Choral Canada, the provincial choral federations, and community- and school-based ensembles. She began working as a collaborative pianist at the age of 14 and in most recent years has accompanied, toured, and recorded with the Cantiamo Choirs of Ottawa, Ottawa Children’s Chamber Choir, and, currently, the Canadian Chamber Choir.
Many of Canada’s finest choirs have commissioned and performed/recorded her works (published by Rhythmic Trident Music Publishing, Cypress Choral music, Silent Dawn Music Publishing, and on www.laurahawley.ca), including Elektra Women’s Choir, Pro Coro Canada, Inuksuk Drum Dancers, Canadian Chamber Choir, Spiritus Chamber Choir, Adlesia, Halifax Camerata, and Shallaway Youth Choir.
Hawley holds a BMus and MA from the University of Ottawa and an ARCT from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. She has taught at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University, and currently teaches composition at Concordia University (Edmonton).
